Troop Medic/Health & Safety Officer

BSA Troop 125

 

When you accept the position of troop medic/health and safety officer you agree to provide service and leadership in our troop.  This responsibility should be fun and rewarding.  This position description tells some of the things you are expected to do while serving as a junior leader. 

 

Requirements for Eligibility:

¨      Elected by the Troop with the approval of the Scoutmaster.

¨      First Class rank or higher.

¨      Completed the First Aid merit badge.

¨      Completed the Totin’ Chip and Firem’n Chit.

¨      Signs a commitment to fulfill duties and requirements of office.

 

Requirements while in Office

¨      Fulfill the duties of the Troop Medic/Health & Safety Officer.

¨      Attend Troop meetings in full Class A uniform.

¨      Attend 75% of meetings.

¨      Attend 4 of 6 campouts if in the fall term.

¨      Attend 2 of 4 campouts and Summer Camp if in the spring term.

¨      Develop three leadership goals for the term.

 

Duties and Expectations of the Troop Medic/Health & Safety Officer

¨      Report to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

¨      Build and/or maintain the troop first aid box.

¨      Re-supply the troop first aid box at the troop’s expense.

¨      Ensure the troop first aid box is stocked and available for every campout.

¨      Be a resource for health and safety knowledge and first aid skills.

¨      Be a resource for first aid on campouts.

¨      Promote safe, healthy camping practices.

¨      Promote and assist in teaching the Totin’ Chip to new scouts.

¨      Promote safe use of knives, axes, and saws.  Supervise marking the ax yard.

¨      Promote and assist in teaching of the Firem’n Chit to new scouts.

¨      Promote the safe building, handling and use of fire.

¨      Ensure the fire extinguisher in the troop trailer is in good working order for scout activities and campouts.

¨      Set a good example and wear the Scout uniform correctly.

¨      Live by the Scout Oath and Law.

¨      Show and help others develop Scout spirit.

 

 

 

Responsibilities and Expectations of the Scoutmaster:

¨      Be available for discussions or phone calls.

¨      Back up your decisions within reason.

¨      Listen to and consider your ideas.

¨      Be fair; listen to all sides of any issue.

¨      Set a good example in wearing the uniform.

¨      Show scout spirit.

 

 I have read and understand the requirements of Troop Medic/Health & Safety Officer and commit to Troop 125 that I will fulfill the duties of this office to the best of my ability.  If I am unable to fulfill the duties I will find a substitute approved by the Scoutmaster or SPL to assume my responsibilities.  I understand that failure to abide by these guidelines may result in my termination from office and/or loss of leadership time toward rank advancement.

As troop medic/health and safety officer there are many resources available to help you.  These include people such as your Scoutmaster, assistant Scoutmasters, troop committee members, your SPL, and your fellow troop junior leaders.  Other resources include your parents, physicians and other healthcare professionals.  Literature resources that can help you include the Boy Scout Handbook,  Junior Leader Handbook and the First Aid merit badge book.
