Troop Historian

BSA Troop 125

 

When you accept the position of troop historian you agree to provide service and leadership in our troop.  This responsibility should be fun and rewarding.  This position description tells some of the things you are expected to do while serving as a junior leader. 

 

The historian collects and preserves troop photographs, news stories, trophies, flags, scrapbooks, awards, and other memorabilia.  You might also collect and organize information about former Scouts and leaders and make materials available for Scouting activities, media contacts, and troop history projects.  You help display information about the troop and its activities during the scout meetings.  You assist Northwest Bible Church in promoting and displaying information about scouting and Troop 125.

 

Requirements for Eligibility:

¨      Elected by the Troop with the approval of the Scoutmaster.

¨      Signs a commitment to fulfill duties and requirements of office.

 

Requirements while in Office

¨      Fulfill the duties of the Troop historian.

¨      Attends Troop meetings in full Class A uniform.

¨      Attend 75% of troop meetings.

¨      Attend 2 of 6 campouts if in the Fall term.

¨      Attend 2 of 4 campouts or Summer Camp if in the Spring term.

¨      Develop three leadership goals for your term.

 

Duties and Expectations of the Troop Historian

¨      Report to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

¨      Be able to draw a diagram of the troop organization.

¨      Find out when the troop was organized and who have been the Scoutmasters.

¨      Start or continue a Troop Scrapbook.  Gather pictures and facts about troop activities.

¨      Collect and preserve troop photographs, new stories, trophies, flags, awards and other memorabilia.  Work with the troop to display these items for the troop in scrapbooks, wall displays, slide shows at the troop banquets, and in information files in the scout office.

¨      Take care of and display troop trophies, awards and keepsakes.

¨      Coordinate “Scout Sunday” activities at Northwest Bible Church.

¨      Coordinate promotion of scouting and Troop 125 with prospective scouts at Northwest Bible Church.

¨      Set a good example.

¨      Wear the Scout uniform correctly.

¨      Live by the Scout Oath and Law.

¨      Show and help develop Scout spirit.

Responsibilities and Expectations of the Scoutmaster:

¨      Be available for discussions or phone calls.

¨      Back up your decisions within reason.

¨      Listen to and consider your ideas.

¨      Be fair.

¨      Listen to all sides of any issue.

¨      Set a good example in wearing the uniform, language, attitude, etc.

 

 I have read and understand the requirements of Troop Historian and commit to Troop 125 that I will fulfill the duties of this office to the best of my ability.  If I am unable to fulfill the duties I will find a substitute approved by the Scoutmaster or SPL to assume my responsibilities.  I understand that failure to abide by these guidelines may result in my loss of office and/or loss of leadership time toward rank advancement.

As troop historian there are many resources available to help you.  These include people such as your Scoutmaster, assistant Scoutmasters, troop committee members, your SPL, and your fellow troop junior leaders.  Other resources include your parents, pastors, teachers, and community leaders.  Some literature resources that can help you include the Boy Scout Handbook and Junior Leader Handbook.
