Chaplain Aide

BSA Troop 125

 

When you accept the position of chaplain aide you agree to provide service and leadership in our troop.  This responsibility should be fun and rewarding.  This position description tells some of the things you are expected to do while serving as a junior leader. 

 

The chaplain aide plans and leads the troop in religious activities and services. Leading the troop in prayer, keeping a prayer list and organizing worship services on campouts are some of your responsibilities.  At summer camp the chaplain aide offers daily devotional messages, leads prayer and worship with the troop.

 

As chaplain aide you work with the troop chaplain who is an adult from the troop committee.  The chaplain aide also works with the troop and the church representatives to coordinate participation for the Troop with church activities.

 

Requirements for Eligibility:

¨      Elected by the Troop with the approval of the Scoutmaster.

¨      Signs a commitment to fulfill duties and requirements of office.

 

Requirements while in Office

¨      Fulfill the duties of the Chaplain Aide.

¨      Attend Troop meetings in full Class A uniform.

¨      Attend 75% of meetings.

¨      Attend the Annual Troop Program Planning meeting if in the spring term.

¨      Attend 4 of 6 campouts if in the fall term

¨      Attend 2 of 4 campouts and Summer Camp if in the spring term.

¨      Develop three leadership goals for the term.

 

Duties and Expectations of the Chaplain Aide

¨      Report to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

¨      Open and close troop meetings and Courts of Honor with prayer.

¨      Lead Troop worship services on campouts.

¨      Deliver daily devotional messages at summer camp.

¨      Encourage scouts and adult troop members in their religious needs.

¨      Keep a prayer journal for the troop.

¨      Coordinates prayer for individual scouts with the troop chaplain.

¨      Promote and help coordinate the God and Country program when offered by the troop.

¨      Make sure religious holidays are considered during troop program planning.

¨      Set a good example.

¨      Wear the Scout uniform correctly.

¨      Live by the Scout Oath and Law.

¨      Show and help others develop Scout spirit.

 

Responsibilities and Expectations of the Scoutmaster and the Troop Chaplain:

¨      Be available for discussions or phone calls.

¨      Back up your decisions within reason.

¨      Listen to and consider your ideas.

¨      Be fair.

¨      Listen to all sides of any issue.

¨      Set a good example in wearing the uniform, language, attitude, etc.

 

 

I have read and understand the requirements of Chaplain Aide and commit to Troop 125 that I will fulfill the duties of this office to the best of my ability.  If I am unable to fulfill the duties I will find a substitute approved by the Scoutmaster or SM to assume my responsibilities.  I understand that failure to abide by these guidelines may result in my loss of office and/or loss of leadership time toward rank advancement.

 As chaplain aide there are many resources available to help you.  These include people such as your Scoutmaster, assistant Scoutmasters, troop committee members, your SPL, the troop adult chaplain, and your fellow troop junior leaders.  Other resources include your parents, pastors, other church leaders, teachers, and community leaders.  Literature resources that can help you include the Boy Scout Handbook and the Junior Leader Handbook.
