Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

When you accept the position of assistant senior patrol leader, you agree to provide service and leadership in our troop. This responsibility should be fun and rewarding. This position description tells some of the things you are expected to do while serving as a junior leader.
You serve as the primary assistant to the SPL. You take the place of the SPL when he is absent. Among your specific responsibilities are the supervision, training and to provide direction for the troop quartermaster, scribe, historian, librarian, chaplain aide, bugler, and the OA troop representative.
Requirements for Eligibility
¨ Appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader with approval of the Scoutmaster.
¨ Completed Oak Leaf Training.
¨ Previously served as a Patrol Leader.
¨ Signs a commitment to fulfill duties and requirements of office.
¨ Fulfill the duties of the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.
¨ Attends all Troop meetings in full Class A uniform.
¨ Attend 80% of meetings.
¨ Attend 80% of Troop Leadership Councils.
¨ Attend the Annual Program Planning meeting.
¨ Attend the “Introduction to Leadership” meeting with the SPL and SM.
¨ Attend 4 of 6 of campouts if in the Fall term.
¨ Attend 2 of 4 campouts and Summer Camp if in the Spring term.
¨ Develops three leadership goals for the term.
¨ Report to the Senior Patrol Leader.
¨ Help plan and lead troop meetings and activities as called upon by the senior patrol leader.
¨ Be responsible for training and giving direct leadership to the following appointed junior leaders: historian, Order of the Arrow troop representative, scribe, librarian, quartermaster, chaplain aide, bugler, and troop guides.
¨ Plan to attend Golden Acorn.
¨ Develop three attainable goals to work toward during this position.
¨ Guide the troop in the senior patrol leader’s absence.
¨ Perform task assigned by the senior patrol leader.
¨ Function as a member of the Troop Leadership Council.
¨ Help the patrol leaders prepare to take part in troop activities.
¨ Work with other troop leaders to make the troop run well.
¨ Know what patrol members and other leaders can do.
¨ Set a good example and wear the Scout uniform correctly.
¨ Live by the Scout Oath and Law.
¨ Show and help others develop Scout spirit.
¨ Be available for discussions or phone calls.
¨ Back up your decisions within reason.
¨ Listen to and consider your ideas.
¨ Be fair.
¨ Listen to all sides of any issue.
¨ Set a good example for you with the uniform, language, attitude, etc.
¨ Prepare you to train the appointed junior leaders.
I have read and understand the requirements of Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and commit to Troop 125 that I will fulfill the duties of this office to the best of my ability. I will fulfill the duties of my office each week. I understand that failure to abide by these guidelines may result in my loss of office and/or loss of leadership time toward rank advancement.

As the assistant senior patrol leader, there are many resources available to help you. These include people such as the Scoutmaster, assistant Scoutmasters, troop committee members, your SPL and other fellow junior leaders. Other resources include your parents, pastors, teachers, and community leaders. Literature resources that can help you are the Boy Scout Handbook and the Junior Leader Handbook.
